Radical- No Future In It.

The Beach in the 70s was attracting its fair share of misfits who were wild and unpredictable. Many board riders were no longer prepared to simply fall into line and live up to parent demands. The post Hippy movement, went against the tide. Those teenagers who were disillusioned by conscription and the Vietnam War now distrusted all authority figures including teachers, police, bosses and even Clubbies. Adults just could not understand this total obsession with the beach and drifting along with no real direction. Surfboard riding wasn’t respected as a sport; there was still no future in it.

Any hot summer Sunday down at the beach the car parks were full of Panel Vans and there flanno shirted owners listening to Deep Purples “Highway Star” or “Space Truckin” blaring on the car stereo. Of course no “Sin Bin” was complete without stickers on the back window stating “Don’t laugh your daughter may be inside” or “No Root No Ride”.
